In a news release earlier today, (IR-2021-59, March 17, 2021), the IRS officially announced that it will extend the individual tax filing season by 1 month until May 17, 2021. (http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-day-for-individuals-extended-to-may-17-treasury-irs-extend-filing-and-payment-deadline).
No forms need to be filed with the IRS for this deadline extension
Payments of 2020 balance due are similarly delayed.
Unfortunately, an extension of 2021 first-quarter estimates is not available.
It is expected that most, if not all, states with income tax deadlines of April 15 will also establish a similar delay in their filing deadlines. At this point in time, Maryland has already extended the deadline.
We will continue to provide updates on other return extensions and state treatment as information becomes available.
We’d love to hear from you. Drop us a note, and we’ll respond to you as quickly as possible.
